The show may have been snubbed at this year’s Emmy Awards, but judging by the fandom, Empire is mostly certainly winning. After premiering its first season at the beginning of this year, Empire is now back with season two on Wednesday nights — AKA the best night of the week!
If you haven’t joined the club of Empire lovers, we’ll give you a quick rundown: The story follows Lucious Lyon and his family who runs the appropriately named ‘Empire Entertainment,’ which focuses its energy mainly on music with hip hop as its main driver. There are, of course, a few catches along the way. Lucious is diagnosed with ALS and has to decide which of his three sons will take over Empire once he is gone. His oldest son, Andre, is the CEO of the company, his middle son Jamal is a singer-songwriter, and his youngest, Hakeem, is a fame –hungry rapper. Throw in their a mother who just got out of prison and you have a family drama perfect for television.
Not sold yet? Here are some very important reasons why you should be tuning into Empire.
10. Timbaland is behind all the music
This show found its gem when they hired Timbaland to produce music for the series. He and his team creates music for each episode, all driven by the script they are provided ahead of time. Oh, and Ne-Yo joined the team for season two — bonus!
9. Its guest star game is strong
Courtney Love, Cuba Gooding Jr, Raven-Symoné, Snoop Dogg, Rita Ora, Chris Rock, Becky G, Mary J Blige … need we say more?
8. The music Jamal creates will have you feeling all sorts of magical things
In addition to his beautiful face, his voice will also have you swooning. Adding to his moody demure is his black sheep status, forcing him to fight a very powerful storyline.
7. The fashion is so on point it’s hard not to drool
With wardrobe items consisting of big name designers and one-of-a-kind pieces, it’s no wonder Empire scored two costume nominations at the 2015 Emmy’s.
6. Love triangles galore
A little bit of drama never hurts, but these characters take their relationship problems to some very complicated realms — and we love it!
5. It’s backed up by some seriously phenomenal actors
The show stars Academy Award Nominees; Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson both of whom bring their A-game, along with Jennifer Hudson, Judd Nelson, and Gabourey Sidibe — just to name a few.
4. Because Cookie Lyons is so incredibly fierce
Attention: we have found your new spirit animal and her name is Cookie Lyons. This sassy mom and ex-wife will do anything to regain her throne at Empire. It doesn’t hurt that wardrobe is fierce.
3. Insider deets about the music industry
Whether you’re into hip hop or not, Empire puts the spotlight on the not-so-glamorous parts of the music industry. It’s like you’re part of a secret club you never want to leave.
2. The scandal is insanely good
Most television shows end with a cliff hanger, but Empire takes the TV lover’s favourite (and least favourite) term to a whole new level. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
1. You can really feel the love
Despite how vicious each character’s attempt is to take over the company, the core of the show focuses on family and how unconditional that love truly is. And, even though Lucious is a bit of a playboy, he and Cookie’s re-kindling could be the next “will they, won’t they” of the century.
